Obituary

There shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying.
There shall be no more pain. -Revelation 21:4

Charles Maurice Brooks was born on July 22, 1914 in Pomfret, Maryland to the late Joseph Edward Brooks and Margaret Elizabeth Brown Brooks. He departed this life for eternal rest on Monday, September 28, 2015 at University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, Maryland.

Charles was affectionately known as "Maurice", "Mr. Maurice", "Uncle Maurice", "Brooks", or "Grandpop". Some referred to him as the "Little Man" because he was so short and then others referred to him as "the man with the million dollar smile" because he smiled broadly most of the time.

Maurice performed many jobs during his lifetime. He often talked about performing hard physical labor. He worked on a farm for $0.50 per week and he worked at the Navy Propellant Plant for $18 per week, however in 1977, he was blessed to retire from State Highway Administration in La Plata with more than 30 years of service.

Maurice recycled before recycling was popular. He collected cans and bottles from the bars and took them to a recycle center for cash. He was a father figure to many and provided a home for some. Before Uber, there was Maurice; transporting more than six or seven people to work on a daily basis. Even on his days off, which were rare, he still transported his riders. And, whenever needed, he assisted neighbors and friends with transportation, even taking some to get their drivers license. Maurice drove until the age of 100. One of his favorite things to do was to sit in the kitchen and listen to country music on the radio.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Agnes Lyles, Lucille Brooks, Delores Parker and brothers, Joseph Brooks and John "Starch" Brooks.

Left to cherish his memory are daughters Mildred Williams (Pete) and Elaine Thomas (Gordon), nephews Alvin Brooks (Pam), Calvin Henson, Charles Brooks (Geneva), grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of other nieces, nephews and friends.

Viewing, 10:00am until time of Service, 11:00am, Tuesday, October 6, 2015 in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland. Interment, Heritage Memorial Cemetery, Waldorf, Maryland.
