IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles "Sonny"
Leon Gray
December 8, 1939 – February 6, 2018
On Tuesday, February 6, 2018, surrounded by the love of his family, Charles "Sonny" Gray quietly transitioned into eternity while at his residence in Indian Head, Maryland. He fought a courageous battle against cancer but ultimately succumbed.
Sonny, as he was affectionately known, was born in Indian Head, Maryland on December 8, 1939 to Irene Gray and the late Charles L. Gray. He was the eldest of seven children.
Sonny was a quiet man who enjoyed the simpler things in life; he was one who asked for nothing but always gave.
Among his many talents, since he was a "Jack of all Trades," he loved to garden and take care of the yard. He also was a bartender at "Penny's Tavern," aka "the Bottom" where he enjoyed and spent many hours talking to anyone who stopped by. He loved cooking and spent a season at Rodney's Ribs and the Lunch Box restaurant in Bryans Road cooking for the many customers that frequented both businesses. Early in his career, Sonny worked at the Indian Head Naval Ordinance Base, was a self-employed taxi driver handling special clients, worked with a corporate cleaning company throughout the Metropolitan DC area, could handle a plumbing job when he had to and remodeled homes for family and friends. He tinkered with cars which he especially loved in his younger years, and knew just about everything going on in Charles County. When he wasn't giving a helping hand, Sonny could be found watching the old westerns on TV and taking care of his mother, Irene, better known as "Puddin."
Sonny attended the Charles County public schools and graduated from Pomonkey High School. He was baptized at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Indian Head, Maryland and had a deep and abiding faith in God.
In addition to his mother, he is also survived by a daughter, Terri Ann Neal (James), grandson, Matthew brothers; Louis (Hope), Tommy (Diane), Jerome "Gee Gee," sisters; Judy (Richard) and Joyce (Tony), a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces/nephews, a great-great nephew, cousins, other relatives and long-time friends.
Sonny's presence in this world will be missed, but we know his spirit will still be looking over his Mom and family.
We're sure Sonny would want to give special thanks to his brothers, sisters and nephews for transporting him to his many dialysis and doctors' appointments. He would also express special thanks to Sadonia Taylor for helping care for his mother and then him as well.
