Bernard's Journey
Charles Bernard Jamieson, more affectionately called "Bernard or Bernie" was a twin of sixteen children born to Harris Samuel Jamieson and Margaret Mary (Bush) Jamieson, Tuesday, March 4, 1947 in Port Tobacco, Maryland.
Shortly after he was born, like his other siblings, he and his twin sister were baptized into the Catholic faith at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Mc Conchie, Maryland, where his family were parishioners.
Bernard grew up in Port Tobacco and attended Port Tobacco Elementary School. He then continued his studies at Bel Alton School in Bel Alton, Maryland from the seventh grade until the end of his junior year. While attending Bel Alton, he was an active member of the NAACP Youth Counsel. In 1964 the Youth Counsel decided to integrate the new La Plata High School. Bernard became the first African American to play football at the newly integrated LaPlata High School, graduating in 1965 with a scholarship to Morgan State College in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a star football player with the Morgan State Bears. After graduating from Morgan, Bernard tried out with the National Football Leagues "Washington Redskins" but was cut because he was too short. He then obtained employment with the Charles County Board of Education as a Physical Education Teacher at Milton Somers Middle School where he remained and retired in 2014 after 44 years of faithful and dedicated service; not only as a Physical Education Teacher but providing support wherever and whenever needed. He may have been the only teacher that had keys to the building! During his tenure with the Charles County Board of Education / Charles County Public Schools, he coached football at Lackey High School, Marbury, Maryland and was very instrumental in establishing the county wide intermural Middle School sports league.
Bernard married his middle school sweetheart, Marlene Lytisha Randall, June 1968. He and Marlene made their home in Pomfret, Maryland. After which, he joined St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pomfret. After eight years of marriage, Marlene and Bernard were blessed with baby girl, Kimberly Veronica, October 1976. Bernard was an active parishioner at St. Joseph's from 1968 until he transitioned to eternal life on Saturday, February 8, 2020. He was the chairperson of the annual church picnic and bingo. He also was an usher and a Eucharistic Minister, just to name a few areas of service. Bernard loved St. Joseph's and was so dedicated that recently when being honored on a Sunday at Shabach Evangelist Ministries, Community Sunday, he had to attend Mass at St. Joseph's first making him tardy at Shabach, which was "okay" with him.
Bernard's hobbies included: growing tobacco and farming alongside his brothers, lawncare, watching football, spending time with his grandchildren, Asa and Adrianna and in later years traveling. He also enjoyed a good meal and eating crabs (especially the all you can eat crab buffets). His proudest moments were the birth of his daughter and twin grandchildren. One of his greatest accomplishments was having the gymnasium at Milton Somers dedicated in his honor and it is now known as the Charles "Bernie" Jamieson Gymnasium.
Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, Anita and Evelyn Jamieson, Margaret Thornton, Theresa Quarles and Juanita Yates; two brothers, Joseph "Melvin" Jamieson, Sr. and Henry E. Jamieson, Sr., niece, Kendra Harley, nephews, Joseph Jr., Randy and Christopher "Chipper" Jamieson and brothers-in-law, James Quarles and Augustus Proctor.
Cherished memories are treasured with his wife, Marlene, daughter, Kimberly "Kim", son-in-law, Antonio "Tony"; grandchildren, Asa and Adrianna; three sisters, Delores Jamieson, his twin, Louise "Bernadette" Proctor and Patricia "Pattie" Hart (Randolph, Jr.); brothers, Vincent (Barbara), George (Faye) and Francis (Phillipa); sisters-in-law, Brenda and Joann Jamieson, Octavia and Arden Randall, Hansa Dayson (Darryl); brothers-in-law, Leon Thornton, Joseph A.
