Obituary

Datcher, Charles Sydney (Age 73) of Suitland, Maryland

Charles Sydney Datcher, affectionately known as "Boy Roy", was born to the late William Frances Datcher and the late Azell Dorothy Gutrick, August 18, 1946, in Charles County, MD.  He received his heavenly wings on Saturday, May 9, 2020, surrounded by his loving family.

Boy Roy was educated in the Charles County school system.  As a young man, Boy Roy held several positions throughout the metropolitan area.  He retired from the District Department of Public Works in 2000.  He could always be seen with a bright smile on his face.  Although he never pursued a career in Auto Mechanics, he was excellent in that field and his work spoke for itself.  Folks came to Boy Roy from all over to have their cars repaired or to get a quick oil change.  On any given day, you would find him outside detailing one of his historic vehicles - Oh, you would never find him riding in a dirty car, that just wasn't his style.

On December 23, 1983, he married the love of his life, Carolyn Loraine Johnson. This December, they would have celebrated 37 years of marriage!!!

Boy Roy was an avid biker.  He began riding with the Cee Cee Riders before forming his own club called the Independent Riders; these groups merged to form the Independent Cee Cee Riders.  After some time, he and his good friend Winston "Winnie" Milstead formed the Sky Hawks Motorcycle Club.   He and Winnie later joined the Heavy Hitter Car Club and he was a member of this group until his death.  Boy Roy often attended Bike Week in Myrtle Beach, and travelled to other club activities in Lake George, New York; Canada, and North Carolina.  Because of his caring heart, he hosted many charitable events through these clubs, such as senior dinners, fish fry's, and the well know kiddie cabarets where kids could come and get candy and a hayride (with Boy Roy as the driver of the tractor) and dance the day away.  He was also an avid Redskins fan.

In addition to his parents, Boy Roy is preceded in death by his sister Geraldine Brown; brothers: William "Bill" Datcher and Wayne Gutrick; nephew Wayne Gutrick, Jr., his grandparents: Lena Queen; Sydney and Mary Datcher; and his mother and father in-law, Wesie Leola Herd and Albert Lewis Heard.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted and loving wife Carolyn; three children: Troy, Renee, and Diniece; six grandchildren: Marquis, Kimoni, Kimya, Isaiah, Charlie, and Sade; two great grandchildren: DeKoni and Bryce; six sisters: Gloria Stanford (Roy), Barbara Wills, Rosemary Haywood (Floyd), Evon Adams, Linda Hodge (Melvin) and Diane Countryman (John); five sisters-in-law: Patricia Bell, Connie Smith (Stanley), Sylvia Barnes, Dorothy Brawner and Tracy Heard; five brothers-in-law: Howard Raymond Johnson (Jackie), Gary Hawkins (Linda), Elroy Herd (Leatrice), Calvin Heard and Wayne Johnson (Beatrice); and Lu-Lu, his cherished grand dog who is already missing him; a very special friend Winston "Winnie" Milstead; a special niece, Takaya Jones; a special nephew, Ron Gutrick who he named Stanley; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

His viewing will be held from 9am until time of Service 11am on Tuesday, May 19, 2020, Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, MD.  Interment St. Charles Cemetery, Glymont, Maryland.
