Obituary

Catherine Etta Harley (Age 77) of Waldorf, Maryland.

Catherine Etta Harley, departed this life on July 18, 2019 at her home after battling four years of cancer. She was born September 17, 1941 in Malcolm, Maryland, a daughter of the late Edith and Walter Proctor (both deceased). Etta married her soulmate, James A. Harley, on September 5, 1959, who preceded her in death year 2009.

Etta attended Charles County public schools, graduating from Pomonkey High School in 1959.

Etta loved spending time with family and friends and eating crabs, especially when Wayne Swann, Daddy and her favorite son, Jerry, would catch them; Jerry always told people he was his mother's favorite son because he was the only son. Momma and Dana switched up on having holiday dinners at each other houses. In her spare time, she crocheted, put together jigsaw puzzles and after putting them together she would exchange puzzles with her sister, Pearline. She loved to play cards such as Woody Pitch, Spades and Tonk, also going to Proctors Inn to get pig feet dinners, going to Dover Downs Casino and playing the slots (cha-ching). Most of all, she loved her role as wife, mommy, sister, Grandma Etta and Aunt Etta.

Etta's favorite saying was "John Brown," so one day her granddaughter Shana asked her who is "John Brown," come to find out there was no John Brown, it was a saying of hers that she would use instead of using a curse word.

Etta was employed at the Corner Bar Carryout with her sister-in-law Cecelia Swann, she left that position in 1969 and was employed at Howard's Restaurant in Waldorf for many years along with her mother Edith (deceased), sister, Mildred Wood (deceased) and nephews Ross and Earl Swann; Etta left that position in 1983. Etta then accepted a position at Archie's Place with her nephews Ross and Earl. Every day at 10:00 am they would turn up the radio to listen to one of her favorite songs Jesus is love on WPGC Radio Station. Etta left that position in 1985. Mommy's most important job was that of being a housewife. We thank mommy for hot cooked meals, a clean house and clean clothes.

Etta is blessed to be survived by many people that loved her and will keep a part of her in their hearts. She is survived by her loving and caring children; Francine Proctor, Jerry Harley and Sharon Harley, daughter-in-law, Dana Harley, grandchildren, Jerry and Shana Harley and great grandchildren, Shaniya and Shai Bannister. She is also survived by her loving and caring sisters and brothers; Pearline Thompson, Anne Shorter, Theresa Butler (Charles), Marian Jordan (Donald), Joseph Proctor, Lawrence Proctor (Kelly), Michael Proctor (Betty), James Proctor and David Proctor; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Butler (Lake), Cecelia Swann and Diane Swann; brothers-in-law, Neal Proctor and Uncle Elbert Swann. Thank you to all of her nieces and nephews for being there.
