Obituary

Catherine Elizabeth Hancock, affectionately known as "Weenie", was born on July 6, 1937, in Clinton, Maryland to the late Nora Louise Legrand (nee Brown) and the late Thomas Jerry Goodwin.  Immediately after her birth, her late aunt, Audrey Walls, nicknamed her "Weenie", a name that will be remembered for a lifetime by all who knew her.

Catherine was educated in Prince George's County Public Schools, having attended Rosaryville Elementary School and Surrattvsille School.  In 1955 she graduated from Frederick Douglas High School alongside her lifelong friend, Dorothy Magruder.  While attending Douglas, she was a member of the National Honor Society, the Student Council, and the band.  According to the school yearbook, her ambition was to be a teacher and her classmates prophesied that she would become a math professor at Morgan College.

On July 27th, 1957 she married her lifelong mate, Lowell Herman Hancock, Sr. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church In Marbury, Maryland.  They were blessed with four children: Michael, Lowell, Jr. (Buddy), Jacqueline, and Jeffrey.

During her life, she worked at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital, the U.S. Patent Office, and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1992.  Because of her gift of gab and ability to sell anything, she also sold Tupperware, Avon, and Amway while raising her family and working for the Postal Service.

Not long after Catherine and Lowell moved from Washington, DC to Bryans Road, Maryland in 1968, they joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she served as an Usher and Church Clerk.  She later became the First Lady of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Nanjemoy, Maryland when Lowell was called to serve as Pastor.  Catherine also served for many years as the Training Registrar for the Potomac River Baptist Association.  Most recently, she restored her membership at her home church Pleasant Grove.

Catherine loved spending time with her immediate and extended families and carried on the tradition of "No one leaves the house without eating something".  Sunday afternoons were reserved for a weekly dinner date with Herman (her nickname for Lowell) at Red Lobster or Golden Corral.  Another favorite pastime was to gather her six granddaughters— The Girls , and ride them anywhere and everywhere in "Grandma's Van", sharing her favorite sayings like "This too shall pass.", "Get the monkeys off your back.", and, when it came to boys, "It's just a passing fantasy".  Catherine also took pride in spending time with her great-grandchildren, having a nice walk around the Mall and treating them to a Chick-fil-A lunch.  She enjoyed telling funny stories from her childhood, a favorite being how she and her cousin, Roland Brown, won a turkey in a contest.  She didn't remember what the contest was, but remembered winning that turkey with a photo in the local newspaper to prove it.  A highlight of her life was traveling and  favorite journey was an educational tour in Israel where she rode a camel up Mt. Sinai.

Catherine Elizabeth Hancock departed this life on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, Maryland.  Catherine is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Rev. Dr., Lowell H Hancock Sr., her four children Michael, Lowell Jr. (Buddy), Jacqueline, and Jeffrey; six grandchildren Daisha, Meatrel, Angela, Charese, Briana and Maya: six great-grandchildren Kevin, Amari, Sophia, Elijah, Aliyah, Avery, London, King, and Ariyah; her uncle Lloyd Brown; Sister-in-law, Yvonne Hancock; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
