LEWIS, CARROLL G. (AGE 75) OF FORT WASHINGTON, MD
On Friday afternoon, April 27 our Heavenly Father called our beloved husband and father home, Carroll G. Lewis, from labor to reward.
He was born in Sandersville, Georgia on December 14, 1936 to the late Annie Celia Lewis and Paris Lewis, Sr.
Inspired and motivated by the Christian values instilled in him by his parents at an early age, he joined Springfield Missionary Baptist Church, Sandersville, Georgia, where he learned about the Lord. He was an active and dedicated Christian member and continued to support the church, spiritually and financially while living abroad, state side and at the time of his death.
He was a graduate of Thomas J. Elder High School of Sandersville, Georgia in 1955. On June 16, 1955 he entered the United States Air Force and traveled around the world on several deployments from San Antonio, Texas; Hempstead, New York; Denver, Colorado; Kisarazu Air Base, Japan; Yokota Air Base, Japan; Manila, Philippines; Saigon, Vietnam; Djakarta, Indonesia; Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and retired as Senior Master Sergeant (SMSGT) on January 1, 1977 in Washington, DC. During his military career he held many titles from Mail Room Clerk, Superintendant of Mails, Assistant Chief of Command Administration, Chief of Mail and Records Branch, Chief of Air Force Post Office. He was also named for USAF Postal and Courier Service "Outstanding Airman of the Year" when stationed in Tehran, Iran.
During his time in the USAF, he met his wife, Robbie L. Louie in Denver, Colorado and later the two were joined in Holy matrimony on August 20, 1968. From this union was a blessing of two children, Carroll A. Lewis and Theresa J. Lewis.
Carroll sought higher education during his military and civilian career at the following colleges; Associates Degree from Prince Georges Community College and a Bachelors Degree at University of Maryland University College in College Park, Maryland, with a Major in Business Administration and Minor in Retail Management.
After his military career, Carroll was employed at the Administrative Office of the United States Courts in Washington, DC as a Management Analyst in November 1976 and received many merit and job achievements. He was appointed by the Director of the Administrative Office of the United States to Chief of Printing and Records Management Branch and worked there until the time of his retirement in December 1995.
Carroll was an avid Redskin football fan and loved watching Sunday Football with friends and family and played numerous football pools where he won many times. When not watching football, he enjoyed reading books and magazines on his Nook and reading emails and jokes on his computer. He was always interested in the latest technology, even owning a touch screen cell phone. He was also known for mentoring and giving guidance when asked, no shoulder left unturned. He also loved gardening, growing tomatoes, hot peppers and bell peppers until the deer and rabbits started to eat the fruit of his labor.
Carroll was a member of the following Fraternal Organizations since 1956; St. Andrew Lodge #32, Sandersville, Georgia (1959), Atlanta Consistory, Atlanta, Georgia (1963); Syrian Temple #49, Denver Colorado (1964); Paradise Elk Lodge, Minot, North Dakota (1968); United Supreme Council, 33°, A.A.S.R of Freemasonry, SJ., Prince Hall Affiliation, Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Maryland, Military Holding Lodge #22 and Life Member of the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Noble Mystic Shrine of North and South America #213.
Carroll was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW), Member of the American Legion, Member of National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association and Member of the Air Force Association.
He was the youngest of four brothers who preceded him in death, late Paris Lewis Jr., late Curtis Lewis, and late Eddie Lewis.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Robbie Lewis of Fort Washington, MD, son, Carroll Lewis of Hyattsville, MD, and daughter, Theresa Lewis of District Heights, MD; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Lewis of Atlanta, Georgia, Lillian Louie in Jackson, Mississippi and Irene Brown of New Port News, Virginia, two nephews, Dexter Lewis of Macon, Georgia and Victor Lewis of San Diego, California. Two nieces, Sharonda Hall of Atlanta, Georgia and Elaine Lewis of Macon, Georgia. Two very special friends, Willie Burns of Sandersville, Georgia and Edward Scott of Oxon Hill, MD, and a host of other relatives, fraternal brothers and friends.
His viewing will be held on Friday, May 11th, 10am until time of service 11am, Fort Foote Baptist Church, 8310 Fort Foote Road, Fort Washington, MD 20744. Interment Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.
