Obituary

Carolyn Ann Newman (née Proctor), of Charlotte, NC, peacefully transitioned on September 13, 2025, after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer.

Born on January 3, 1945, in Washington, D.C., Carolyn was the beloved daughter of Rosielee and William "Bubboy" Proctor. She was raised in Oxon Hill, Maryland, until the family moved to Waldorf, Maryland, into the home her father lovingly built. Carolyn completed her education in the Prince George's County Public School System and graduated from Fairmont Heights High School in 1963.

On June 20, 1964, she married her longtime friend and love, the late Melvin E. Newman (d. 2016). Together, they built a life rooted in love and family, raising two children, Tyrone and De Borah. The family made their home first in Waldorf, then later in Landover, Maryland.

Carolyn was a devoted wife and nurturing stay-at-home mother. She also worked in retail and direct mailing, bringing her signature warmth and diligence to every role. She found joy in traveling—especially cruising—playing the slots, and spending cherished time with her family and friends..

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Newman, her parents, Rosielee and William Proctor; eight brothers: William "Nace," Leon "Sonny," Joseph "Jack," James "Hot Dogg," Jacinto "Tinnie," Robert "Hooks," Michael, and Charles "Tubbie" Proctor; and five sisters: Blanche "Sis," Hilda Proctor, Rosielee Savoy, Pamela Proctor-Hawkins, and Mary Janice "Judy" Proctor.

Carolyn leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter. She is survived by her devoted children, Tyrone Newman and De Borah Moore (Rodney); two cherished granddaughters, Shannon Gore (Maurice) and Shahawna Allah (Rahim); two bonus grandchildren, Scottie Moore and Rodriquez Moore (Hope); and six adored great-grandsons who called her "Golden Nana": Leo, Noah, Braydon, Liam, Korbin, and Ezra.

She is also survived by one brother, Henry "Bill" Proctor; one sister, Karen Proctor (William "Bunzy"); her dear friend, Daniel Butler; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family, and lifelong friends who will remember her with deep affection and gratitude.

Carolyn's spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew her—graceful, generous, and unforgettable.
