Callie Gilchrist Brown 81, of Pisgah, MD, departed this life Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at Genesis Health Care Center in La Plata, MD.
Callie Brown was born on January 16, 1935 in Edge Field, South Carolina to Sam and Liza Gilchrist. Callie departed this life Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at Genesis HealthCare Center in LaPlata, MD.
Callie Brown obtained her education in the Edge Field South Carolina public school system where she graduated and received her high school diploma in1950. On January 15, 1951, shortly after graduation, she married her soulmate Rallie Brown Jr. From this union, four children were born: Gloria Simmons, Vivian Wilson, Roland Brown (deceased) and
Christopher Brown, Sr.
She attended Calvinade Beauty Academy, Inc. in Washington, D.C. where she honed her talents as a Cosmetologist. Soon after, she became a licensed beautician and gained a host of loyal clients and friends until she retired at the age of 70. Rallie and Callie accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior at Pisgah Seventh Day Adventist Church where they both became pivotal members. She was an active and faithful member in the church. She held many positions including Head Deaconess, Treasurer, LAY Activity Leader, Sabbath School Superintendent, Church Clerk and Community Service Leader and faithfully served for over 25 years. While she served as a devoted leader on the Community Service Committee, she was instrumental in starting the Genesis Nursing Home Ministry to provide ministerial services to patients. She also hosted several county community events for the WIC program and orchestrated several food drives with the Southern Maryland Food Bank. Callie was also known for her generosity and hospitality and opened her home to several Pastors and members of Pisgah Church for church dinners. She was a dedicated foster parent to many children in the Washington, D.C. foster care system and opened her home to them at a moment's notice. She thoroughly enjoyed baking and was known for making her famous dump cake, sweet potato pies and fruit cakes for her guests.
She was preceded in death by her late husband of 49 years, Rallie Brown Jr., her son, Roland Brown and her grandson, Carterrys Orr.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories daughters, Gloria Simmons and Vivian Wilson; sons, Christopher Brown, Sr., Gregory Zigler (Ann Zigler), Charles Garris and Frank Garris; six grandchildren, Bianca Green (Ronald Green), Markus Lyles, Angelle Dorsey (Delvan Dorsey Jr.), Christopher Brown Jr., Deathony Warrick, and Z'nia Brown; six great grandchildren, Paris Orr, Madison Green, Markus Lyles Jr., Brooklynn Dorsey, Parker Brown and Khaleah Warrick; three sisters, Maggie Gordon, Janeva Herrings (Rico Herring) and Pauline Johnson; four lifetime near and dear friends: Letha Walker, Minnie Hightower, Harriett Langley and Clifford Mayfield and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Her viewing will be held on, Wednesday, August 10th, 6pm-9pm, and again on Thursday, August 11th, 10am until time of funeral service performed by Pastor Melvin E. Hayden, 11am at Pisgah Seventh Day Adventist Church, 5830 Bumpy Oak Road, Bryans Road, MD 20616.
Interment: National Harmony Memorial Park, 7101 Sheriff Road, Hyattsville, MD 20785.
