Obituary

Barbara Arnita (Greene) Thomas Powell, 85 of La Plata, Maryland.

Barbara Arnita Thomas Powell was born on Wednesday, July 27, 1938 in Washington, DC, the first child of Lelia Greene and John Greene.

Barbara grew up in Washington, DC and graduated from Dunbar High School in 1958.  After graduation she worked at several small companies for several years, after which she worked at the Naval Ordnance Station in Indian Head, MD, before joining the Capital Cab Company as a Bookkeeper, retiring in 1993.

She became a permanent resident of Rison, MD in 1975 and remained a resident of Charles County of which she would refer to as "down the county" until she transitioned.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Lelia Greene, husband, Joseph Powell, sister Carolyn Jerry, brother, John Greene Jr., sons Wendell (Tommy) Thomas, Lonnie Coles and grandson Anthony Bland, Jr.

Barbara transitioned September 13, 2023 at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in LaPlata, MD.  She was a member of Alexandria Chapel United Methodist Church.

Left to cherish many fond memories are her children Judy Murray (Evans), Wendy Noble Burns (Ivian), Anthony Coles and Edward Coles (Senora); grandchildren Terria Coles, Ashely Coles, Lonnie Coles, Jr., Christopher Noble, Raven Bland, Bria Coles, Lamar Coles, Lelia Coles, Virginia Henson, Xena Craig, Jeannine Thomas , Taiji Jenkins, Jennifer Murray, Evans Murray, Jr., 19 great-grandchildren, niece Phyllis Sewell and nephews Tyrone Sewell and Jonathan Jerry.

Barbara was an avid Dallas Cowboys football fan who would participate as if she was the coach on the sidelines yelling and calling plays.  She was her son Anthony's Road dog and enjoyed watching Westerns and game shows.  She loved shopping, the casinos and listening to music especially the Blues and Motown and enjoyed fishing with her daughter Wendy and eldest great-granddaughters.   Barbara visited her daughter Judy in Tennessee frequently and enjoyed spending time with her Clarksville grand and great-grandchildren.

Family and Friends Gathering, 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 22, 2023 until the time of the Celebration of Life Service, 12 noon, in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640.  Interment, Fort Lincoln Cemetery, 3401 Bladensburg Road, Brentwood, Maryland.
