RILEY, AVOID CORNELIUS "ROCK" (Age 77) OF FORT WASHINGTON, MARYLAND.
OBITUARY
Avoid Cornelius Riley, son of the late Daniel and Geraldine Riley, was born on April 16, 1935, in Washington, D.C. He departed this life on Thursday, October 18, 2012, at the Mandrin Inpatient Care Center in Harwood, Maryland. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Anthony Riley, and one sister, Juanita Winters.
He was educated in the Washington, D.C. public schools. He joined the United States Navy in 1953 and completed nine years of service. In 1994 Avoid retired from the Smithsonian Institution.
Forty-four years ago, in July 1968, Avoid met Delores (Del) Montgomery, the love of his life. The two married in September of that same year. From this union a beautiful daughter, Crystal, was born.
Avoid joined Grace United Methodist Church under the pastoral leadership of the late Reverend J. 0. Waters. He served as a trustee and volunteered his services with the Warm Nights Program, which provided food and shelter for the homeless.
He was truly a family man who adored his daughter and grand-daughter. He enjoyed reading novels, playing cards and watching television, especially western movies, boxing and court T.V. He was a helpmate and a homebody. He often smiled and said, "When Del goes on vacation, mine begins at home."
Avoid leaves to cherish his loving memory: his wife, Delores; one daughter, Crystal; one granddaughter, Corynn; four brothers, Daniel Abbott, (Jean), Bernard, Maurice and Kenneth Riley; three sisters, Thelma White, Bernice Mathews, and Carolyn Jones; two brothers-in-law, Weldon and Robert (Julia) Montgomery; one sister-in-law, Eunice Hooper; thirty-five nieces and nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.
Happy moments, praise God. Difficult moments, seek God. Quiet moments, worship God. Painful moments, trust God.
Every moment, thank God.
