Anita Estelle
Holmes
September 26, 1935 – August 25, 2023
Anita Estelle Marva Lewis Holmes of Accokeek, MD, transitioned to her heavenly home August 25, 2023 at Adventist HealthCare Fort Washington Medical Center. She was 87 years old. Estelle was born September 26, 1935 to the late Dorothy and James Alfred Lewis in Accokeek, MD. She was the sixth of nine children.
Estelle attended Charles County, PG County, and DC schools. She attended Pomonkey Elementary School, Indian Head, MD, and St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Elementary School, Washington, DC. She went to middle school at Sojourner Truth Middle School, Oxon Hill, MD where she was crowned Miss Sojourner Truth. After middles school, she attended Upper Marlboro High School, but graduated from Fairmont Heights High School where her class was the first to graduate there.
Not long after graduating from high school, Estelle met Colbert Holmes, Jr. They married Aug. 28, 1954, moved to Foot St. SE, DC, and had two children, Linda Holmes and the late William "Billy" Holmes, II. They would later adopt the late Wanda Holmes. Later in life, Estelle and Junior moved to Capital Heights, MD. While there they took in and raised their grandsons, Matthew Pinckney, Sr. and Charles Pinckney. They moved to Camp Springs, MD, then Accokeek, MD where they furnished a home for their great- grandsons, Matthew, Jr. and Micah Pinckney.
Estelle worked several federal government jobs, and retired from The Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, DC. Later in life she joined Good Shephard Baptist Church where she later became a deaconess.
Estelle enjoyed going on cruises and vacations with her family, and in-laws. She also enjoyed watching old western movies.
Estelle was preceded in death by her parents; Dorothy and James Alfred Lewis; husband, Colbert Holmes, Jr.: Son, William "Billy" Holmes, II; daughter, Wanda Holmes; sister, Blanche Campbell; and brothers, James, Harold, Joseph, Alfred, and John Lewis.
Estelle leaves to cherish her daughter, Linda Pinckney; Grandchildren, Matthew Pinckney, Sr., Charles Pinckney, Nadira Watkins, and Omar Vincent; Great-Grandchildren, Matthew, Jr., Micah Pinckney, Mathias Pinckney, Leyla Pinckney, MaVonte Compere, and NiJae Compere; and Great – Great- Granddaughter, Divine Pinckney; Sister Mary Ann Young, and Brother Henry Lewis; Sister In-Laws, Rose Elaine, Edna, Shirley Lewis, and Ruby Lewis; and Brother In-Law Eugine Holmes; godson, Treyvon Lewis, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and relatives. Special thank you goes to Father Brian Vander Wel, Deacon Lee, Marquita Phillips, Anthony Baker, Sr., Mark Lewis.
Viewing, Tuesday, September 19th, from 10am until time of funeral service at 11am in The Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, 3439 Livingston Road Indian Head, MD. Interment, Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, MD on Tuesday, September 19th at 1:00 pm.
