Obituary

Al was born to Jewel Gantt and Alphonso Perry on April 24, 1952 and reared by Alex Steward. He graduated from Dollarway Senior High School in 1970 and graduated from the Kentucky College of Technology – Louisville, KY in 1973. He moved to Washington, DC and attended Howard University for two years.  He made the decision to leave Howard for gainful employment with WJLA- Channel 7; where he remained for approximately 30 years.  He joined Fort Foote Baptist Church in 1991 where he held the positions of Trustee, Director of Media Ministry and Minister in Training. After his initial retirement, he joined the University of Maryland's television media teaching staff for approximately 10 years.

He was preceded in death by his father's Alphonso Perry and Alex Steward; and his sister Barbara Blunt.

He is survived by his daughter, Stefenie Perry, his son, Alexander Perry along with a loving daughter-in-law, Champale Perry; all of Fort Washington, MD; his mother, Jewel Gantt-Steward of Pine Bluff, AR; his brothers, Arthur Cooksey and Gregory Cooksey of Pine Bluff, AR; and his sister, Sharron Steward-Hicks of Waldorf, MD. He is also survived by seven nieces: Cynthia Mooney-Richmond of Fresno, CA; Shannetta Steward-Poole of Waldorf, MD; Lanika Cooksey of Tucker, AR; Samantha Hicks of Waldorf, MD; Mylia Poole, Madison Poole and Meaghan Poole of Waldorf, MD; five nephews: Antone Hicks and Andrew Hicks of Waldorf, MD; Derkice Mooney of Oklahoma City, OK; Marquett Poole of Waldorf, MD and Curtis Richmond of Fresno, CA; another host of nieces and nephews as well as several godchildren: Yohance Brunson, Pine Bluff, AR, Yosha Brunson-Kuhl of AZ and Yomen Brunson of China, Knyondra and Kamrin McMillion of Pittsburgh, PA; and Christina Nerimah of Fort Washington, MD.

Friends may visit with the family Saturday, July 10, 2021 from 10am until time of service 11am at Fort Foote Baptist Church, 8310 Fort Foote Road, Fort Washington, MD.

Interment, Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
