Obituary

Alveda Oleatha Barbour, age 56 of Fort Lauderdale, FL and later Fort Washington, MD, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 5, 2013.

She was born to the late Oleather "Honey" Leonard on August 8, 1956. She would be raised by Ann and Rev. Tommie Nelson.

Alveda attended Nova High School, before attending Florida A&M University, where she graduated with a B.A. in Elementary Education. She became a licensed pre-school teacher and taught at Bolling AFB Child Care Center, Andrews AFB Child Care Center, Silesia Early Learning Center, and Ft. Washington and Ft. Foote Early Learning Center, etc. She was an avid supporter and former adult leader of the Boy Scouts of America. She was a member of the New Mount Olive Baptist Church in her youth and Fort Foote Baptist Church at the time of her home-going.

Family and friends were Alveda's passion and delight. She took pride in raising two sons that were admittedly "a handful". She loved to travel and visit members of her large family. Her hobbies included collecting gemstones, creating beautiful jewelry along with arts and crafts.

Alveda is survived by her adopted mother, Ann Nelson, her husband, James R. Barbour, Sr, her two sons, James, Jr. and Brian, and her father-in-law, George Barbour. She is survived by her brothers and sisters: Titus Raymond Rich, Theodore Rich, Tommie Tillman, Vannie Mae Tillman, Loretta Leonard, Warrie Dean Leonard, Emma Nealy, and Kenneth Nealy. She also leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends.

A public home-going will take place Friday, July 12th, 2013 at Fort Foote Baptist Church, 8310 Fort Foote Road in Fort Washington, MD 20744. The viewing will take place at 11 am and the service will begin at 12 noon. It will be streamed at www.fortfootebc.org. Interment, Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, Maryland.

The family wishes to thank all of those who have sent prayers, cards, well-wishes, and condolences. In lieu of flowers, we ask that gifts and donations be made out to Alveda Barbour and sent to 12804 Lampton Lane Fort Washington, MD, 20744.
