Obituary

Agnes Elizabeth Colbert Washington was born July 11, 1936, and was raised in Chapel Hill, MD. Her parents were the late William Harrison Colbert and Annie Elizabeth Colbert. She is the first of six siblings: three girls and three boys. She was baptized at Grace United Methodist Church. Agnes was educated in The Prince George's County School System and graduated from Fairmont Heights High School in 1953.
She attended Howard University and began her career in the Federal Government in 1955. She met and married her husband, Walter Washington, in 1956 after his discharge from the U.S. Navy. During their marriage they were blessed with three children, relocated in 1969 to live in Warren, Ohio and Willingboro, New Jersey and retuned to Maryland in 1978. She retired from the Federal Government after 39 years of service
in 1999 as a Financial Specialist. Agnes is also proud to have 5 grandchildren, 1 step grandchild, 2 great grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren.

Agnes is an active member at Grace United Methodist Church and has served as an Acolyte Coordinator and Chairperson of the GUMC Mansfield Scholarship Ministry. She is currently a member of the GUMC Mansfield Scholarship Ministry, Tribe of Judah of GUMC, The United Methodist Women and the GUMC Veterans Ministry. Agnes' favorite song is "If I Can Help Somebody" and one of her favorite scriptures is
Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

Agnes was very involved in church and family events including Chapel Hill Citizens Association, Fairmont Heights High School Class of 1953, Colbert Family Events, Washington Family Events and The African American Heritage Society of Charles County (AAHS).

Friends may visit with the family Monday, August 11th from 11am until time of funeral service at 12noon in The Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, 3439 Livingston Road Indian Head, MD 20640. Interment will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at 1:45 p.m. at Maryland Veterans Cemetery Cheltenham, MD.
