Obituary

Agnes Catherine Barnes entered peacefully into eternal rest on Monday, April 2, 2012 surrounded by her family at home in Indian Head, Maryland. She was born March 1, 1930 to the late William Mckinley Thomas and Emma Gutrick Thomas.

Agnes graduated from Pomonkey High School in 1947. She married the late Joseph Theodore Barnes June 18, 1949 and together they shared 40 years of marriage. From this union there are seven children; Sharon Coleman (Larry), Barbara Simms (Leon), Paulette Harris (the late Willie), Alvin (Brenda), Patrick (Brenda), Kenneth (Teri), and Stacie (William Juan).

Her passions included creating floral arrangements, gardening, cooking, and family gatherings. Her favorite holiday was Christmas. She would start planning her tree colors months in advance. She has had as many as eight trees at one time. Her children loved to bring their friends over to see the beautiful decorations. In our opinion, she made the best pound cake and potato salad around. Her favorite game and expression was CONNECT 4! She was a member of the American Legion Post #170 Randolph Furey Women's Auxiliary for fifty-two years.

Preceded in death by her sister, Anna Mae Davis, brothers John Francis Thomas and William McKinley, Jr., great-grandson Aiden James Robinson, and son-in-law Willie J. Harris.
Affectionately remembered as Mama, Grandma, GiGi, and AB, she was cherished by twelve grandchildren, Sherisse Watson (Robert), Adrienne Williams (Preston), Colette Simms, Corinne Robinson (Keith), James (Susan), Jarod (Jenna) and Janelle Harris, Alicia (Steve) and Aaron Barnes, Courtney Brooks (Jamar), Derek and Kenneth Barnes Jr., and twelve great grandchildren; Shae and Devon Gutrick, Daniel and Sydni Simms, Jayda Robinson, Trevor, Rae, Clyde and Willoe Harris, Julien and Jason Brooks, and Justin Barnes.

She also leaves to mourn brothers, William "Bub", James, Philip and Charles Thomas; sisters Mary E. Thomas-Willis , Emmagene Baker, Theresa Taylor and Gertrude Outerbridge; brother-in-law Rufus Outerbridge; sisters-in-law, Mary B. Thomas, Louise N. Thomas, Virginia Thomas, Gloria Thomas, and Agnes Rita Pickeral.

Her viewing will be held on Monday, April 9th, from 9am until 11am, at Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, MD 20640. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:00 noon at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 30 Mattingly Avenue, Indian Head, MD 20640. Interment St. Charles Cemetery, Glymont, MD.
