Monica Lea Bland Harris

Bland Harris, Monica Lea (Age 47) of District Heights, Maryland.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF MONICA LEA BLAND HARRIS

Monica Lea Bland Harris, a kind and loving woman, departed this life on Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, Maryland. Monica was recovering from open-heart surgery which was performed earlier in the fall at the Med-Star Washington Hospital Center in the District of Columbia.

Monica was born on April 06, 1965 in Washington, D. C. to Elenora Butler Bland and the late James D. Bland. The proud parents welcomed not one, but two bouncing baby girls, Monica and Kimberly.

Monica attended Dupont Park Seventh Day Adventist School during her elementary school years and received her high school diploma from Saint Cecelia’s Catholic School. After graduation from Bowie State University with a degree in Social Work, Monica worked at various agencies in the field of Social Work before joining Tate, Tate, and Tate Tax Service in Maryland, specializing in financial planning and bookkeeping.

Her spiritual development began at an early age when she attended the family church, Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Marbury, Maryland.

In 2003 Monica joined in holy matrimony with Michael Kenneth Harris. On September 20, 2005, the couple welcomed an adorable baby girl whom they named Maiya Leah Harris.

In addition to being a mother extraordinaire, she enjoyed cooking, most notably for her sweet potato pies and leg of lamb roasts; watching comedies; and shopping. She was a “Diehard” Redskins Fan; collector of black jazz, art, and woodwork. Monica was very athletic, played basketball, and racquetball champion at Bowie State University.

Monica leaves to mourn her passing a devoted and loving husband: Michael Kenneth Harris; daughter: Maiya Leah Harris; mother: Elenora Butler Bland; twin sister: Kimberly Ann Bland; brother: Brian Bland (Melissa); Mr. and Mrs. David Robinson; uncles: Randolph Bland, Phil Chesley, Ellis Butler; aunts: Eudora Chesley and Elizabeth Butler; nephews: Brandyn Bland and Kimoni Kush; mother-in-law: Dr. Marie Harris Aldridge; father-in-law: Jacob Kenneth Bentley; close friend: Vanessa Fisher; twin goddaughters: Shacarus and Cierra Harding; godson: Parraize Butler; niece: Latisha Dennis; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Viewing, 9am until time of Service, 11am, Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 5560 Pleasant Grove Road, Marbury, Maryland. Interment, Church Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to THORNTON Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland.
